Meet Our Coaches
Girls Who Checkmate was created to help girls grow through chess in a space that feels supportive, motivating, and personal. As players who have competed for years, we understand both the challenges and the confidence that chess can build. Our goal is to make high-level chess training more relatable, encouraging, and accessible for the next generation of girls.
Our Team
Gabriela Antova
Gabriela believes chess can help every girl build confidence, think independently, and find her own way on and off the board.
A Woman Grandmaster originally from Bulgaria, Gabriela started playing chess when she was six years old. Since then, she has traveled the world through chess, winning five European Youth medals and a bronze medal at the World Youth Championship. She has also represented Bulgaria at the Women’s Chess Olympiad, one of the most prestigious team events in the chess world, and competed as part of Saint Louis University’s championship-winning collegiate team.
Now focused on being the mentor she wishes she had as a young player, Gabriela uses her experience at the highest levels to help students feel capable, prepared, and excited to improve. Her teaching style is kind, patient, and encouraging, with lessons built around each student’s goals, strengths, and challenges.
When a student works with Gabriela, they gain more than a coach. They gain a friend and mentor who believes in them, supports their growth, and is always in their corner.
